Events

There are five main events per year, usually coinciding with traditional Dutch festivities.

  1. At the start of the year (February), De Wieken hosts an old fashioned 'stamppot' dinner party.

  2. In spring, we celebrate ‘Koningsdag’ (April 27), together with Memorial Day at our annual membership meeting.

  3. A popular summer event in August is the Indonesian potluck dinner (rijsttafel), featuring the cuisine of the former Dutch East Indies, a welcome deviation from routine Dutch or American cooking!

  4. In October, the club participates in the Raleigh International Festival by displaying our cultural heritage and by offering select Dutch culinary creations.

  5. In December, we celebrate 'Sinterklaas' (not to be confused with Santa Claus), when the old Saint stops in Raleigh on his way to Holland, to bring presents to local Dutch-American children.

In addition to these celebrations De Wieken organizes various monthly or one-time events.

At monthly koffieklets gatherings the club offers opportunities to practice conversational Dutch and exchange Dutch news, books and magazines.

And... members get together on a monthly basis to play Klaverjassen, a popular Dutch card game.

Whenever possible, get-togethers are at members' homes, thus providing a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere.
